Pacific Drift, pt. 2: Big Island film

8324-029.jpg

Sometimes, almost a year goes by then you finally get around to doing the things you set out to do long ago.
That’s me at the moment — can anyone else relate?
The last 2 parts of PACIFIC DRIFT that I got to create with model Malia Murphey + Billabong Women’s got sent into the archives so I’m bringing them out for some fresh air!

This trip in particular was a quick island hop away to Hawai’i Island (commonly known as Big Island). Hope you enjoy a few 35mm snaps from our time there just before the volcanic eruptions …

B U E N O S * D I A Z // film

My appreciation for vintage thingz has been passed along from my mum and dad who love thrifting on the regular. They collect Hawaiiana and other memorabilia and so I’ve spent a chunk of my childhood perusing thrift stores all over the place.

When my friend Shea Diaz decided to finally make the move from California to Hawai’i and open her quaint little storefront in the Old Waialua Sugar Mill, I was beyond thrilled for her new venture. Hawai’i needs more vintage. There’s so much treasure to be discovered! So much culture!

So if you love hand-picked goodies that’ll take you back in time and give you all the vintage feelz, you have to check out her store BUENOS DIAZ! Open Saturdays 10am-3pm … and stay on her IG as she often posts her gems to be sold directly: @buenosdiazvintage :)

Meeting Amanda

Every once in a while ... when schedules permit ... and stars align, I get to meet a new human via "Test Shoot." I think I've said this before, but it's been through photography that I've met some of the most amazing and talented people. That's enough to keep me coming back for more . . .

Amanda was visiting Maui a couple of months ago and decided to pop over to O'ahu for a day so that we could capture some goodness. That made me so happy. She is sweet with piercing beauty, soft spoken but fierce nonetheless. We had horrible weather all day on the North Shore but decided that we would brave the storm and make the best of our circumstances --- from what we gathered, you couldn't tell we were hiding from rain squalls under the rainforest and our photographic adventure was topped off by a spontaneous ahi katsu run so that didn't suck. :)

Enjoy these snaps of @amandaperlita_

Sunnier Days

Sometimes sunny days are hard to come by during Hawaiian winters, but when the sun decides to show its face, best believe we are making the most of those moments!
Halloween 2017 stands out in my mind for a day full of fun surf with all the crew ending up in the water serendipitously . . . the sunrise was out of this world, and the sunset put on a show for us too . . . it'll definitely go down in my memory bank as a day I'll never forget.
And although I got to enjoy a surf in the evening with my friends, I'm so happy I took out the housing for the sandbar session earlier that afternoon. Here are some snaps of happy campers enjoying the calm before the storm :)

TESTS: Anna Briggs

I mostly love shooting people because of the rich conversations, exchanges, and friendships that can be cultivated in a couple of hours between a piece of glass. It intrigues me and inspires me and these beautiful moments in time are what keep me coming back for more.

My short time spent with Anna Briggs on this particular day stood out amongst other shoots I've done this year. We chose simplicity over complication, nature over things touched by man, and the outcome made my soul happy.

FILM: Lily

My DSLR has been moody lately -- maybe it was Mercury -- or maybe it was just tired of working, and so film has made a comeback in a huge way in my life as of late.

Film was my foundation, and although I wish I was still in the dark room, I still thoroughly enjoy that state of anticipation waiting for rolls to come in ...

Here's a couple clicks of Lily <3

Coconut Comradery

Alana Spencer is someone that should be on your radar.
I've known her since she was just a tiny 12-year-old surfer grom, but she's always carried herself different than the rest. She's grown into such a beautifully calm, gracious, and gifted woman and it's always exciting to see what kind of projects she's diving into.

It was a pleasure taking her pic as she made time for me in her busy schedule right before flying out to the Gold Coast of Australia. Having self-employed friends who travel all over the world for work is so inspiring; but it's always the best when we get to catch up on life in our favorite place on earth, HOME.
